La Mer Grise, affectionately known as Gracie, has embarked on a new career beyond the racetrack after capturing the hearts of many during her time with the Lingfield Park Owners Group (LPOG).
Brought as a yearling from the Tattersalls Yearling Sales in 2023, La Mer Grise quickly became a favourite at Tony Carroll’s yard, admired for her kind temperament and easy nature. She represented LPOG with genuine effort and determination on the track, including runs at her home course, Lingfield Park.
Despite her honest performances, suitable race opportunities became limited, and the decision was made to retire her early. It was a choice taken with her future in mind, with confidence that she had an exciting career ahead in another discipline.
Earlier this year, Gracie was rehomed to Lisa, an experienced competitor in the showing world, who has been delighted with how quickly the filly has adapted to life after racing.
“I’d seen so many videos and photos of ROR horses online, and I knew I wanted to give a racehorse a second chance,” Lisa explained. “I expected a highly-strung ex-racer, but Gracie settled straight away. Just ten days out of racing, she looked every inch the athlete. With the right care, she’s already transforming into a beautiful riding horse.”
From their very first weeks together, Gracie proved calm, brave, and honest — qualities that shone when she made her debut in the ROR (Retraining of Racehorses) show ring. What was intended as a simple experience-gaining outing quickly turned into success: Gracie impressed the judges, secured 3rd place, and qualified for the prestigious ROR Championships.
Her progress hasn’t stopped there. Within just three months, Gracie attended her first stay-away show, taking the new environment and atmosphere in her stride. Most recently, she showcased her potential on the big stage at Aintree, competing against 50 other horses and demonstrating that she has the temperament and talent to thrive in her second career.
“She’s been incredible from the very beginning,” Lisa added. “With time, more topline, and ring craft, I know she’s going to achieve so much in this new chapter.”
Celebrating National Racehorse Week
La Mer Grise’s story could not be more fitting as the racing industry marks National Racehorse Week — a nationwide celebration that gives the public a chance to see first-hand the love, care, and dedication that goes into looking after racehorses, both during and after their careers on the track.
From the moment she stepped into Tony Carroll’s yard, through her racing days with LPOG, and now in her flourishing second career with Lisa, Gracie embodies what National Racehorse Week is all about: showcasing the versatility, resilience, and affection of thoroughbreds, while highlighting the lifelong commitment made to their welfare.
Her journey is a shining example of how ex-racehorses can go on to thrive in new disciplines, bringing joy to new owners and proving that life after racing can be just as rewarding and successful.
For those visiting racing yards and retraining centres during National Racehorse Week, stories like Gracie’s help demonstrate why every stage of a racehorse’s life is celebrated — from training and competition to retirement and beyond.
As Lisa says, “She’s my new best friend — and the beginning of the most exciting chapter is still to come.”
